Spanish island nears energy independence

March 31, 2009

Whilst researching renewable energy systems for my previous blog, I came across an island which should inspire and motivate the rest of the world to adapt a similar policy.

El Hierro

El Hierro

A Spanish Island called El Hierro hopes to become completely energy independent in the next year.

After 10 years of preparation, the infrastructure is finally being put into place in order to create a  fully self-sufficient zone for its 10,000 inhabitants. There will be no back-up power connection to other islands or the mainland.

Renewable energy sources such as wind and solar are being used. In addition, the island plans on banning oil completely. Rather than using gas-guzzlers as modes of transportation, the island is going to implement eco-friendly hybrid vehicles.
